Why Join A Fraternity?
Drake Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) is a unified group of organizations unlike any other. In an era of cultural stigmas and shifts, it is understandably challenging to find a group of individuals that stand up for their beliefs and are passionate about their future goals. Stereotypes rage against fraternities, brought down upon the whole due to the actions of the few. Some people may never get to experience the dramatic life changes that Drake FSL can bring because of those stereotypes.
Drake FSL's Community inspires philanthropic endeavors, social change, networking capabilities and ultimately a deep familial bond that can run l through your entire life post graduation. The students in fraternities and sororities at Drake inspire each other to be better, whether that be in academics, social environments or spiritual journeys. It gives students a home away from home while giving them necessary leadership skills and experiences that they'll never forget, not to mention the relationships and love that develop and last a lifetime, and I wouldn't be standing here today without the wonderful men and women I have met since joining ATO.
Why ATO?
There are many words that come to mind when people talk about Greek life: Frat. Partying. Exclusivity. Sketchy.
However, when people on my campus and within the organization talk about ATO, I hear these words: Brotherhood. Leadership. Service. Fellowship. Social change. Alpha Tau Omega goes far beyond the call of duty for most fraternal organizations by returning to the original standards and principles that these kinds of organizations were founded upon.
As it is states in our creed, ATO was founded “to bind men together, in a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principles,”—we don’t take that sort of thing lightly. ATO at Drake did not survive by partying, drinking, and being exclusive; it survived because a brotherhood was built that could last for generations.
As founding fathers of ATO, we set out a clear goal: to recruit men with strong moral character that would help build an organization worthy of Drake University’s prestigious campus. We wanted to enter Drake's community by being the examples that we never saw in the media about fraternity life. Drake FSL is already redefining Greek Life and we wanted to contribute to that. Basically, we wanted to be a success story. ATO is an organization of outstanding leaders who sought opportunities to improve campus life and leave a lasting legacy. And gosh darn it, I think we did it.
Why ATO? Because ATO sets out to be the change we want to see in the world.
